I’ve come to learn,
my most effective teacher.

Everything else down there

It’s me, your namesake:
“dweller by the high place
who draws strength
from connection to elevated landscapes.”
I believe my mother’s choice
to call me that
was divine communication,
not coincidence.

You’ve seen a billion sunsets,
and millions of winters.
Created by glowing lava
and tectonic wrath,
you’re invincible to everything I know.
A celestial crucible,
symbol of transformational ordeals.
An arrowhead of God,
with one side adversity,
and the other strength.

I’m merely a brief visitor
to your world of relative immortality;
a shooting star
in your permanent sky;
a drop of water
running off your back.
A tourist in heaven,
running your jagged edge.

Today I’ll imbibe my maximum tolerance of your power,
as your impact travels up through my legs;
as you harden my bones and resolve,
to be just a little more like you.
And I’ll return as often as I can
for more tempering,

In the forest
inspiring friends
tell me stories
of purpose,
survival, and growth
despite obstacles...
owing to suffering
of wind pummeling,
flood sweeping,
snowpack burials
in winter’s dark,
core-hollowing lightning,
and parasites boring though
drought-wearied bark.

They endure this
to be a little closer
to the sun
on deep blue days,
while laughing off
a coat of fresh powder,
and to fast
on thin pristine air
below cold
star-filled skies.

A hundred years
can’t tire them
of breeze and sway,
sacred stillness,
noble patience
for rain,
wildlife’s symphony,
and solitude’s silent temple.

Housing grateful life,
mightily pushing roots
ever deeper,
to drink from
sparkling snowmelt,
holding the earth
together,
tilling boulders,
below fallen companions who
merge with soil,
and pass on life
to seedlings
who emerge into this
otherworldly realm
of adversity
and awe.

Oozing sap
from iron trunks,
lush needles
on gnarled branches,
scars on flexible pillars
of this green church,
express in
flawless tree song
the ten-thousand tree joys
and ten-thousand tree sorrows.

When I was 5, it was yo-yo tricks. At 8, I shot f

When I was 5, it was yo-yo tricks.
At 8, I shot free throws after school in the driveway.
At 10, front flips on the trampoline.
Then rollerblading figure eights and playing street hockey against myself all weekend.
Junior high school was the hacky sack obsession.
In college it was karate forms.
In my late 20s I decided to become ambidextrous at tennis by hitting left-handed (forehands and backhands) against a wall for months, for a more symmetrical workout.
This past couple of months it was hundreds of thousands of wrist rolls with a 1.8-pound 70-inch closet pole.

Focus on movement is focus on the body.
Focus on the body is focus on the present.
Focus on the present is spending time with God.

5 months in. The bottleneck to getting better seems to be recovery time. Getting faster requires fresh arms when the staff feels light. After a while, it feels heavy and slow and there are diminishing returns, and it takes a couple days for it to feel light and fast again.
