Most people tend to associate attitude with emotions and thoughts, rather than actions and words.
Telling people to “have a better attitude” often upsets them because they don’t have as much direct control over emotions and thoughts as they do over their actions and words.
It sets us up for failure. Now we have all our problems plus one more: our attitude isn’t adequate.
Often, a better approach is to remind ourselves that it’s time to do the damn thing that we don’t want to do, and feeling good or happy about it is optional.
It’s a lot easier to act a certain way than it is to feel a certain way. Not that either are easy, but the action is doable far more often than the spontaneous feeling.
Often, the feeling will come after the actions have received focus for a while. But not always.
